Quick checks before you call

These are safe to try and sometimes solve the problem — saving you a visit.

  1. Make sure the temperature dial wasn't bumped. Fridge should be about 37°F, freezer about 0°F.
  2. Check that food isn't blocking the air vents inside — that's a common cause of a warm fridge with a cold freezer.
  3. Listen near the back or bottom: if the compressor hums but nothing feels cold, write that down for us.
  4. If the coils under or behind the fridge are covered in dust, cleaning them can help (see our coil cleaning guide).

Questions

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

The service call is a flat $55 and covers coming out and finding the problem. If you go ahead with the repair, the $55 is applied to it. You'll get the full price before we do any work, and you can say no.

My fridge is warm but the freezer works. What's wrong?

Most often it's an evaporator fan that stopped, a defrost problem that iced over the coil, or blocked airflow. Our guide to a fridge that isn't cooling walks through it.

Is it worth fixing an older refrigerator?

Often, yes — fans, sensors and defrost parts are reasonable to replace. If the repair costs more than the fridge is worth, we'll tell you straight. See repair or replace.

Do you work on built-in and high-end refrigerators?

Yes, including built-in units like Sub-Zero. Tell us the brand and model when you book so we can plan for parts.

Can you handle refrigerant and sealed-system problems?

Yes. Our technician is EPA Section 608 certified to handle refrigerant, and we diagnose sealed-system problems with digital gauges. If a sealed-system repair doesn't make sense for an older fridge, we'll tell you.
